What’s the Scoop on: Turmeric


Turmeric is a highly powerful herb with a plethora of amazing health and healing properties.

Turmeric is a wonderful herb that you need to know more about, and in this blog I will touch on just some of it’s fantastic properties.

No.1 -High in antioxidants 

Turmeric contains high levels of antioxidants such as curcuminoids (often abbreviated to curcumin) which produce the pronounced yellow colour, and are known for giving curries and spicy dishes their characteristic golden colour.

Antioxidants are substances that help protect the body from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. These free radicals are an unavoidable part of life, resulting from exposure to pollution, smoking, secondary smoking, consuming burnt food and even as a result of metabolism in our own bodies.

These potent antioxidant properties found within turmeric help protect cellular DNA from being damaged, help to neutralize free radicals, reduce oxidation and repair cellular damage that has already occurred. Free radicals are known to be one of the big causes of aging, so you could arguably call turmeric quite the beauty herb.

No. 2 – Anti inflammatory

Turmeric has been shown to have significant anti-inflammatory qualities, as well as pain relieving properties making it a great herb for bones and joints.

If the body is not able to repair effectively, the body’s inflammatory responses and mobility can become impaired, and over time chronic inflammation can lead to cellular damage and irregular cell repair. This in turn can cause problems, for example arthritis.

Luckily however, turmeric is recognized as a fantastic natural treatment for inflammatory conditions including arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

No.3 – Lover of your liver

Turmeric has been shown to protect the liver, helping improve circulation through the liver, increasing bile and enhancing both phases of liver detoxification.

As a result of the curcuminoids increasing bile flow, improvement in the breakdown of dietary fat can occur as can the encouragement of anti-platelet activity, therefore helping to reduce cholesterol and plaque.

This powerful herb enhances the activity of certain substances that protect the liver against the damaging effects of free radicals and toxins. Traditionally, turmeric has been used to help treat jaundice and generally support the liver.

No. 4 – A friend of your immune system

Turmeric is well known to be a great anti-microbial, with much scientific research to show that it can inhibit pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi.

This makes it a great herb to help fight fungal infections, including Candida, as well as being an overall immune supporting herb to help ward off colds and flus.

So how do you take it?

Turmeric can be taken in a capsule (preferably with long or black pepper) as this improves the absorption of turmeric’s nutrients and phyto-nutrients) but can also be used as a culinary ingredient in powder form or even in its raw form.

It can easily be added to recipes, either sprinkled into dishes such as curry or soup, or added to roasted vegetables or grated through the dish raw.
It can also be taken in a drink form, either as a tea or latte form, added to smoothies (in powder or raw) or made into a juice.

Add it to your Fire Cider recipe, into a latte, or into a juice.

Anti-inflammatory Juice recipe

2-3 large carrots
1 orange
1 apple (optional) 
1 Lime (skin removed)
Inch sized piece of ginger
1/2 Inch sized piece of turmeric

Juice all ingredients and enjoy!
