Today we’re starting a new blog series on Caring for Your Teeth Naturally.
Part One is all about caring for your teeth naturally from the outside.

That way, you get the ultimate guide to caring for your teeth in a natural & healthy way, from both the inside and the outside. After all, optimal oral health comes from supporting the body and mouth from the inside and outside at the same time.

Tip 1 – Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is simply the act of swishing oil (usually Coconut, Sesame or Sunflower) in the mouth for up to 20 minutes first thing in the morning. The oil is pulled back and forth through the teeth and gums, and then spat out.
This oil acts as a powerful cleanser, picking up and drawing out the millions of bacteria and toxins that live in our mouths. It cuts through plaque and removes toxins from the body.

Oil pulling is a natural way to clean and detoxify the teeth and gums and even has the added bonus effect of whitening teeth naturally, helping to improve our overall oral health.

Personally, I love to oil pull! It makes my mouth feel incredibly clean, plus I’ve experienced a decrease in plaque, a reduction in tooth sensitivity and an overall whitening of my teeth.
My current favourite product to oil pull with is Geoorganics Oil Pulling Mouthwash (Peppermint). It’s simply a blend of coconut oil and peppermint essential oil.

Tip 2 – Natural Toothpaste

It’s of no surprise that toothpaste is listed here under natural oral hygiene practices, but let me introduce you to a golden gem of a toothpaste that I discovered 2 years ago.

Geoorganics Activated Charcoal toothpaste.

Geoorganics toothpastes have been developed to clean and remineralise teeth naturally, which is the reason I personally hunted it out. They’re high in key minerals including calcium, potassium, magnesium and natural organic silica. Then I came across the activated charcoal version blended with organic peppermint essential oil, and that was it, I was hooked!

Here’s a little low down on the clean and natural ingredients in the toothpaste and what they’re used for.

Calcium Carbonate

Use: as a mild polisher and remineralising agent.

Fractionated Coconut Oil

(aka MCT Oil (Medium Chain Triglyceride)
Use: as a natural stabiliser to those products containing virgin coconut oil, to maintain a soft texture even at low temperatures.

Kaolin Clay

Use: as a natural, mild polishing agent and to whiten the enamel without damaging it. Plus due to its highly absorbent properties, this clay effectively detoxifies the mouth removing oils, secretions and toxins.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Use: acts as a natural emollient and humectant, serving as an alternative to synthetic glycerin. Coconut oil helps to reduce oral bacteria, prevent dental decay from forming and helps to prevent plaque-induced gingivitis and tooth decay.

Shea Butter

Use: due to the moisturising and nutrient-rich properties of Shea Butter, shea is used here to combat a dry mouth, help maintaining smooth and soft oral tissues, as well as being used to naturally improve the texture of the product.

Diatomaceous Earth

Use: helps to effectively clean teeth without damaging the enamel. Works as a mild abrasive as well as a great source of natural silica, essential for tooth strength.

Sodium Bicarbonate

Use: as a polisher and whitening agent. This low-abrasive powder removes tooth stains as well as alkalising the pH in the mouth to promote remineralisation.

Activated Charcoal

Use: activated charcoal is mildly abrasive and has highly absorbent properties making it an effective stain remover. It is also perfect for drawing toxins which can cause bad breath and gum disease.

Essential Oils

Use: to give flavour and to avoid using synthetic flavourings. Also acts as a natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.

Tocopherol

aka natural vitamin E (Tocopherol)
Use: as an antioxidant in the production phase and as a natural preservative to extends shelf-life.

You can use it twice or day, every day, or like me, I just use it once in the morning after my oil pulling and then I use a different toothpaste in the evening. I don’t like to use bicarb too often on my teeth, as although it is gentle, it’s still abrasive.

Herbal/Natural Toothpaste

Then it comes to regular toothpaste. I’ve now come to the conclusion I’m a bit of a natural toothpaste groupie. I love trying and using different natural toothpastes!
Basically, you want to look out for what toothpaste suits your personal needs. Whether it’s gentle, whitening, herb based e.g calendula, salt based, remineralising, minty, fluoride free etc.

Tip 3 – Bamboo Toothbrush

Since I’m personally on a plastic reducing mission, I’m all for the compostable, sustainable and environmentally friendly bamboo toothbrush options that are available to us now.
Bamboo toothbrushes are easily compostable, so don’t end up sitting for decades in a landfill releasing toxic chemicals as they decay. Plus they’re much more sustainable than plastic ones. I highly recommend you look into them.

Tip 4 – Tongue Scraping

This may be a bit far out there for many, but I absolutely LOVE tongue scraping! It’s an Ayurvedic self-care oral hygiene practice that removes bacteria, food debris, fungi, toxins, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue.

This is a great oral hygiene practice to adopt which promotes tooth and gum health. Plus, it helps to remove bacteria and toxins that may be responsible for bad breath, plaque build-up, tooth decay, gum infections, and gum recession.

When we sleep, our digestive system remains awake, removing toxins from our body by depositing them onto the surface of our tongue. If you ever have a consultation with an Ayurvedic specialist, the tongue is one of the first things they look at as it can tell a lot about your health. The same goes for a Chinese health practitioner.

Scraping the tongue daily helps to remove any build-up on the tongue, plus it’s incredibly satisfying to do!

How to scrape your tongue

Traditionally this Ayurvedic practice is done daily in the morning on an empty stomach using a long, thin, flat piece of metal that is bent in a “U” shape (aka a tongue scraper).
You can also do it in the evening before bed, and even during the day to help freshen your breath.

Ask in-store about ordering a tongue scraper if you’re interested. To get the idea, you can try using the side of a metal spoon which can also be mildly effective.

Tip 5 – Flossing

Flossing helps to remove the bacteria that hides in the tiny spaces between your teeth. A build-up of bacteria on the teeth or gums can lead to complications such as cavities and gum disease.

We stock AloeDent Dental Floss which is made from shred-resistant nylon floss coated in natural beeswax to help it glide gently between the teeth. There is also added Aloe Vera to soothe your gums and give you a refreshing minty taste.

A water pick or water flossing is an alternative option if regular floss isn’t something that works for you.

Tip 6 – Mouthwash

For further protection against plaque, tartar, cavities, bad breath, discolouration and gum disease, consider adding mouthwash to your routine.

Alternatively, you can rinse your mouth with warm sea salt water once a day in order to get rid of any unwanted bacteria. Additionally, add a few drops of food-grade clove or mint oil if you want to freshen up your breath.
