Easy Vegan Swaps


January is the perfect time to switch up your routine and try something new. Many people will be embarking on a vegan journey this month, which can be a little daunting to begin with. To help make the transition a little smoother, we have put together some vegan substitutes for your favourite foods. Even if you don’t plan on switching to an exclusively vegan diet, squeezing some more plant-based foods into your diet is always a good idea. To put it simply, we’re encouraging everyone to eat more plants 🌱


Chickpeas are an excellent replacement for eggs. To make vegan scrambled egg heat and mash the chickpeas with some tumeric and nutritional yeast and serve on toast. Don’t discard the water from your can of chickpeas! It is full of protein and can be whipped up like egg whites and used to make meringue, chocolate mousse, or folded into fluffy pancake batter. If your recipe requires stiff peaks, boil your chickpea water before whipping for a more concentrated solution.


Finding a perfect plant-based substitute for every meat is a tricky task, but there are certainly some suitable alternatives that will ensure your go-to meals can stay on the menu. Brown lentils do a wonderful job at subbing in for mince in a Bolognese or shepherd’s pie. Hickory-smoky Tofurky is a great protein source for wraps and sandwiches.


The unmistakable smoky sweetness of bacon is easily replicated by marinated tempeh slices. Packed with protein and free from nitrates, tempeh bacon does more than just tick the box as a vegan alternative. A combination of soy sauce, olive oil, maple syrup, liquid smoke and paprika makes the marinade for thinly sliced tempeh to soak up. Fry in a hot pan for delightfully crispy strips, perfect for a vegan BLT.
