Matters of the heart stretch far beyond love and relationships. Essential to survival, your heart works tirelessly to pump oxygenated blood through the body, beating around 100,000 times a day. Heart health is inextricably linked to overall wellbeing. In fact, we believe a great way to show yourself some love is to look after your heart. Here are some of our top tips for maintaining a healthy heart.

Nutrition

Eating a diet rich in wholefoods is beneficial for many aspects of health, and heart health is certainly no exception. To ensure optimum cardio function, arteries should be clear of excess fat build up. This allows blood to be circulated through the body without placing unnecessary pressure on the heart due to blockages. Limiting the amount of heavily processed and high saturated fat content foods consumed helps to ease undue pressure on the heart. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants such a vitamin C, vitamin E, and CoQ10 has been shown to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease

Exercise

The heart is a muscle, and like any muscle it can be strengthened through exercise. It is advised that we all get 30 minutes of daily exercise to elevate our heartrate and engage the heart. This may be running, a brisk walk, pilates, or weight training. The best part is the endorphins are free!

Rest

Although we don’t hear it enough, relaxation is a key factor in maintaining a healthy heart. Stress puts a lot of pressure on the heart can be the cause of blood pressure issues and a variety of other cardiovascular health issues. Taking some time out of your day to destress is just as important as getting exercise. We all find solace in different activities, from meditation and yoga to reading and baking. Top tip: lighting candles is a great way to transform a space from a working environment to a sanctuary. You could also try burning essential oils to promote relaxation.

Supplements

We would always advise those with a heart condition to consult a medical professional as each case is unique. However, there are some supplements we can recommend to anyone looking to reduce their risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease in the future. To support overall health and help to manage cholesterol and blood quality we would recommend taking Essential Fatty Acids. Eskimo, Udo’s Choice, and Minami are some of our favourites. Antioxidants play an important role in maintaining heart health. CoQ10 is great for antioxidant and circulatory support along with A. Vogel Hawthorn tincture, Vitamin C supplements, and Optima juices.
